THE STORY
LEARNING TO FLY, the documentary, tells the story of five seniors who are drama students at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and their iconic Drama Prof, Vera J. Katz, 32 years teaching at the famed HBCU--Howard U before taking her unique skills to Ellington for 24 years. These students’ dreams include breaking down the alarming statistics that Black actors in America have encountered for years…statistics that underscore how invisible and powerless they have been in the entertainment industry. Yet, through it all, Katz, who has devoted her life to fighting this inequity, has had a huge impact for 50 years by supporting Black actors as they cross this challenging bridge to stardom. Now these kids want some of that magic.
